Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek at a glance
How the grades compare across routes: Nepal trek difficulty grades explained.
Overview
The Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is a short loop in the foothills west of Pokhara, climbing through Magar and Gurung villages and rhododendron forest to Poon Hill at 3,210 m. From the top, the sunrise view takes in Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range, Machapuchare and many lesser peaks across the skyline.
Most of the trek stays below 3,000 m, so altitude is rarely a concern, but the trail involves long stone staircases, especially the climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri. Days are moderate in length, and lodges are plentiful in every village, from Ulleri and Ghorepani on the ridge to Tadapani and the stone-built Gurung village of Ghandruk on the way down.
It suits first-time trekkers, families with active children, and anyone short on time who wants a taste of Himalayan trekking without high altitude. In March and April the rhododendron forests flower in red and pink; in autumn and winter the skies are usually clearest for the mountain views.
A licence-verified local guide you contact directly can arrange permits and transport from Pokhara, time the Poon Hill climb for the clearest sunrise, and explain the villages and culture along the way.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek itinerary
- Day 1
Kathmandu to Pokhara
Travel to Pokhara by tourist bus along the Prithvi Highway or by a short domestic flight. Spend the afternoon by Phewa Lake and meet your guide to check gear and permits.
- Day 2
Drive to Tikhedhunga, trek to Ulleri
A jeep takes you from Pokhara past Nayapul to the trailhead near Hile or Tikhedhunga. From there, a long stone staircase climbs steeply to the Magar village of Ulleri, with the first views of Annapurna South.
- Day 3
Ulleri to Ghorepani
The climb becomes gentler as the trail enters rhododendron and oak forest via Banthanti and Nangethanti. Ghorepani sits on a ridge with many lodges and views towards Dhaulagiri.
- Day 4
Poon Hill sunrise, then to Tadapani
Leave around 4:30–5 am to climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m) for sunrise, then return for breakfast. Continue along the forested ridge via Deurali, then descend to Tadapani for views of Machapuchare.
- Day 5
Tadapani to Ghandruk, drive to Pokhara
Descend through forest to Ghandruk, one of the largest Gurung villages in the region, with a small museum and stone-roofed houses. From Ghandruk a jeep takes you back to Pokhara in the afternoon.
This trek climbs above 3,000 m, where the pace of the climb matters. See our guide to altitude sickness on Nepal treks for how to prevent, spot and respond to it.

- NPR 5,000 per person (≈ US$32)
- Guide day rates
- $25–$40 per day, set by the guides below
- ACAP at NPR 3,000 (about US$19): even this short loop sits inside the Annapurna Conservation Area. Most people buy it in Pokhara the day before the jeep to the trailhead.
- TIMS card at NPR 2,000 (about US$13): the Nepal Tourism Board includes Poon Hill (with ABC) in its list of guide-required routes, so the agency that books your licensed guide issues it.
- Checkpoints: the first check is at Birethanti or Tikhedhunga at the bottom of the Ulleri staircase, with another in Ghorepani village. Have both permits handy rather than packed away.
- Rates are set by the authorities and do change; confirm before buying.

Getting there & back
This is the most accessible trek from Pokhara. A jeep to Tikhedhunga, Hile or Nayapul takes about 1.5–2 hours, so you can leave Pokhara after breakfast and be climbing to Ulleri by midday. At the end, jeeps wait in Ghandruk for the 2–3 hour ride back. The dirt sections slow down or close after heavy monsoon rain.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek FAQs
How hard is the Poon Hill trek?
It is one of the easier treks in Nepal and suits most reasonably fit people, including first-time trekkers. The main challenge is the long stone staircases, especially from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri, which are tiring on the legs. Walking poles help on the descents.
Do I need to worry about altitude sickness?
The highest point is Poon Hill at 3,210 m and you sleep no higher than about 2,860 m, so serious altitude sickness is uncommon. Some people still feel mild headaches or breathlessness on the climb. Walk at a steady pace, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell.
Do I need a guide for the Poon Hill trek?
Yes. Poon Hill is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, where a licensed guide has been required for foreign trekkers since 1 April 2023, and the Nepal Tourism Board lists the Poon Hill–ABC route among those needing one. Here the guide's most visible job is getting you out of the Ghorepani lodge in the dark at the right time for the sunrise climb.
What permits are required?
The ACAP and a TIMS card. For a trek this short it is simplest to let your agency buy both in Pokhara when you meet your guide, and to carry them for the Birethanti and Ghorepani checks.
When is the best time to go?
October and November usually bring the clearest mountain views, and March and April are popular for the rhododendron flowers. December to February is cold at night but often clear, and the trail is quieter. During the June–September monsoon, cloud often hides the peaks and the trails are wet and leech-prone.
What are the lodges like?
Ghorepani and Ghandruk are among the busiest lodge villages in the Annapurna region, with many teahouses, attached bathrooms in some and menus far longer than on remote routes. Tikhedhunga, Ulleri and Tadapani are smaller. In October and November the Ghorepani lodges fill quickly the night before sunrise, so your guide may reserve ahead.
Can I do Poon Hill with children?
Yes, many families do this trek, as the altitude is moderate and days are not too long. Plan shorter stages for younger children, especially on the Ulleri staircase, and allow an extra day if needed. Your guide can adjust the itinerary to suit your group.
